World War II

1. What countries fought against who?
  • On one side were the Axis Powers, including Germany, Italy and Japan. On the other side were the Allies. They included Britain, France, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, the Soviet Union, China and the United States of America.
2. Where did it occur?
  • World War II took place across the globe. Most of the combat action took place in Europe, East Asia, and islands in the Pacific Ocean, but others were seen in places as far away as Madagascar and the Aleutian Islands.
3. Name and describe a few events that happened during Word War II.
  • November 30, 1939–March 12, 1940, The Soviet Union invades Finland, initiating the so-called Winter War. The Finns sue for an armistice and have to cede the northern shores of Lake Lagoda and the small Finnish coastline on the Arctic Sea to the Soviet Union.
  • December 8, 1941, The United States declares war on Japan, entering World War II. Japanese troops land in the Philippines, French Indochina (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia), and British Singapore. By April 1942, the Philippines, Indochina, and Singapore are under Japanese occupation.
  • September 2, 1945, Having agreed in principle to unconditional surrender on August 14, 1945, Japan formally surrenders, ending World War II.
4. How can we honor and show respect for WWII veterans?
  • Say thank you.
  • Visit a grave of a veteran.
  • Attend a veteran’s day event.
  • Proudly display your American flag
